Practice Oriented Systemic
Design 2026 in Oslo

For the Practice Oriented Systemic Design (POSD) 2026 continuous education course, 48 professionals gathered digitally and afterwards at Oslo Metropolitan University for an intensive course dedicated to Systemic Design methods. This second edition marked an important evolution of the programme, bringing together participants from Norway, Germany and France.

The course combined a hybrid format, starting with online exchanges on HyHyve over two months, followed by in-person sessions in Oslo. This structure enabled participants to build connections early, share practices in 10 intercultural groups and arrive prepared for hands-on collaboration. Parallel sessions allowed for a high density of input, with knowledge continuously shared across groups.

Participants came from a wide range of sectors, including public institutions and private companies such as Engie, Orange, Bosch, Siemens, Landor UK and Oslo Police. The group reflected a diversity of international professional profiles, from designers (UX, service, strategic) to sociologists, biologists, educators and alumni from partner institutions.

The programme was an introduction module that addresses key Systemic Design frameworks, including Systemic Archetypes, Iceberg Model, System Traps, Leverage Points, Paradoxical Thinking, the Three Horizons Model, Systemic Oriented Leadership, Communication Analysis and many more. These were explored through a combination of analytical tools, visual mapping (Gigamapping and Causal Loop Mapping) and tangible, practice-based exercises. The applied dimension was central, with direct links to real-world contexts such as food systems, agriculture and leadership.

Beyond the sessions, informal moments such as a collective a lovely walk to Ullevålseter contributed to building a strong group dynamic and creating meaningful exchanges.

The last session took place on the 19th of May 2026, where participants reuinited digitally to share their final Gigamap, as well as their work process, followed by feedback from peers using the method of Conversation Theory.

ESDL Virtual Campus on Hyhyve

For the POSD continuous education course 2025, 2026 and beyond, we created a personalised digital interaction map, using the real-life architecture of the three cooperating universities as an inspiration.

Our ESDL Virtual Campus was hosted at Hyhyve, an interactive meeting platform.

The use of this digital platform enabled the team to create more dynamic teaching formats across their three different countries.

Anonymous Participant Reflections

I felt that collective energy among design professionals again – that spark I remembered from my years in academia. It not only reinforced how important it is to be around people with a similar background (fellow designers), but the shared drive to make the world better didn’t just validate my theories, it truly inspired and energized me.

The combination of online collaboration and the later in-person meeting created a very positive dynamic within the group. The digital phase was a good starting point and helped build curiosity and openness towards other participants, while the stay in Oslo especially strengthened the team spirit and personal exchange. For me, this was definitely one of the highlights of the course.

The course offered a strong bird’s-eye view of what Practice Oriented Systemic Design is about. The materials were well-structured, rich, and thought provoking. They helped me connect different domains of thinking – systems, futures, and critical reflection – into one integrated perspective.

The discussions were also a valuable part of the learning experience.
